When I first started sewing I followed Skip To My Lou's tutorial (here) to make zippered pouches. I think I made about half a dozen of them. Some were straighter than others, some had neater stitches, but with each one I improved. Search the web for a pattern you're interested in then make several of the same thing. Practice may not make perfect, but trust me your sewing will improve.
